Origin Story
Absinthe begins as a medicinal elixir in the Val-de-Travers, commercialised by Major Dubied and his son-in-law Henri-Louis Pernod.
Phylloxera devastated the vineyards and made wine expensive. Absinthe filled Parisian cafés, and five o'clock became the green hour.
Blamed for madness after the Lanfray murders, absinthe was banned across Europe and the US. Modern analysis exonerated thujone, and legal sales resumed.
